Who am I?

MeSpaceMy name is Mackenzie Schieck and I am a proud Seattleite, pop culture sponge, Justin Timberlake enthusiast, Friends expert, Nancy Drew wannabe, amateur interior decorator, snickerdoodle connoisseur, and bandwagon Seahawks fan. (What? Bandwagons are fun. And…well…I like fun.) Oh, and I am also a writer!

It’s been a bit of a dry spell in the way of awards since I took top prize in the second grade division of the Geneva Elementary School Fiction Contest, but there are still a few things worth mentioning. I graduated from Western Washington University in 2001 with a degree in creative writing, and promptly delayed official adulthood by continuing my position as a Starbucks barista for three more years, finishing with a total of six years slinging espresso.

I spent a couple more years in my hometown of Bellingham, Washington, alternating between SEO/digital contract writing and working as a display merchandiser at a local Crate & Barrel-type home store before moving to Seattle, where—business cards in hand and a cubicle to call my own—I entered full-on adulthood.

As an editor at Allrecipes.com for seven years, I wrote everything from marketing and user interface copy, to blog posts and editorial features that included a monthly column called Single Servings (the original name of this blog). In June of 2013 I made the jump to freelancing, and continue to contribute to Allrecipes, as well as publications like Apartment Therapy, FeedFeed.com, and HelloGiggles, plus a variety of other clients. If you’re a regular reader of Pine and Crave, I suppose you could consider yourself one of my “clients.” Although I prefer the term, “super fan.” Or whatever. Either way—it’s your call.

When I’m not writing, you might find me making my way on foot around Green Lake or along Alki; settling in for an evening of New Girl or Scandal; meeting friends for breakfast, movies, or dinner; or posting pictures of lattes to my Instagram account. It’s all lattes (and sunsets), all the time, and I see no reason to stop.

  4. Mackenzie, although you may not need any help, I just wanted to encourage you to register for the Blogging 101 that starts Monday 8/3. I registered for the previous one and unintentionally took the WP admonishment “no deadlines” and have fallen way behind their daily installments for two weeks, but I did review all the lessons and was duly impressed their block of instruction. I got a lot of good constructive ideas that I’m working on…

  5. Good luck on the pink, WP is a terrific resource. However, despite all their admonishments to experiment, it’s scary to do so for fear of screwing-up one’s beloved efforts. My email is cfr46@outlook.com. Send me something, particularly, if you want to discuss WP.

  6. Great title, nice website, quite prolific, congratulations! Although I’m not a foody, I do appreciate food done well. It would be nice to have a WordPress ally. My effort is less ambitious and not as pink.

    • Foster, hey! Nice to have a WP buddy who I actually know in real life! Thank you so much for the compliments, I really appreciate it. I’ll have to pop into your blog…we’ll see if I can’t talk you into a little more pink;).

  7. Love this, M! When the hubby has his soccer or basketball games during normal dinner time, I usually resort to cereal (I know, it’s like I never left college). So this is great. Plus, I can always double the recipe and make it for two!

BTW- is there a “order M’s snickerdoodle cookies” on this site. 🙂 miss those cookies of yours.

    • LOL. That may not be a bad idea for a side business, running batches of cookies all over the city…snickerdoodle food truck?!

Thanks for the note–I’m so happy you’ll be able to use the blog!
